A wonderful week charged by alcoholic extremes - heavy drinking on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The remaining days saw no booze at all. May try and keep next week relatively sensible (although seven on Monday may not help).
Monday I was guest of Microsoft's development team at the Science Museum. They were giving £2 to Great Ormond Street hospital for every drink consumed (whether alcoholic or not). I like to think I did my bit for the kiddies :) Top night in many ways. Seeing Stephenson's Rocket and Babbage's difference Engine away from the usual throng was stunning. Have never actually been there - I really need to get to London more often.
Flew out to Berlin early Tuesday morning and enjoyed a memorable time thanks to Canon (the Berlinale film festival was on and co-sponsored by Canon). The Bloody Mary on the flight was much needed. Had a little free time after lunch and so a group of us went to the Holocaust Museum - deeply disturbing but essential. This was followed by the Premier of Road to Guantanamo Bay. A harrowing film (especially after the Holocaust Museum), and one with a definite goal, but it works all the same – it’s amazing what people will do to each other…
Flew back from Berlin on Wednesday and grabbed some much needed sleep without a touch of booze – actually I’ve just remembered I had a pint in the airport and a mini bottle of wine on the way back.
Old mate from Oz was over on Thursday, which equated to much drinking and the scrapping of plans to drive back to Melksham and get drunk there. Ended up crashing in the Francis after hitting Moles (awful music); still a good night was had, and definitely good to see Jim once again.
Didn’t drink a thing on Friday (was feeling too fragile to be honest). Popped round Adam and Hagar’s on Saturday after going to Isaac’s best friend’s birthday party. Got reasonably hammered in the evening playing Dead or Alive 4 on his Xbox 360. Good fun, although not that different from anything that’s gone before.
Sunday? A day of rest obviously.

Just sat through 3+ hours of Peter Jackson's King Kong. Can I please have that time back? Please. What was the f'in point of that? No seriously... I'm open to suggestion here.
Booze: last week was up and down a bit - started off with a classic monday night, didn't drink tuesday or wednesday (went to the pub on both days and drank coke) and avoided on friday too. Drank more than I intended on saturday at Jen and Nick's, and have just finished off a bottle with Neil while wondering why Jackson managed to double the length of an already spot-on movie...

Watched Mulholland Drive last night. Confusing? Yes. Worth watching? Definitely... unless you like your films incredibly simple and spelled out for you. Seriously, if you find Underworld (et al.) challenging, then avoid this. If you were intrigued by Donnie Darko and Memento, then you've probably already seen this anyway...
Booze: not too bad this week. Did TAX on monday, theater on Tuesday (only had time for a whiskey before going to bed), Lou over on wednesday, Poker night with non-drinkers on Thursday (won £8) and no big nights up the pub = low score. Friend over from London on Monday followed by Seven should equate to this many units being drunk in the space of one night. Everything in moderation and all that... including moderation.

Finally managed to pay my tax. Feel so relieved it's ridiculous. Wasn't so bad in the end either - don't have to pay on account for next year, and I'd already paid a good chunk of this year's off. My bank balance isn't so healthy, but at least I didn't have to get a loan. Coming off deadline tomorrow, have confirmed trips to Berlin and San Fran, so life is indeed sweet. Really knackered mind.

Fairly social week over the last seven days, including an old school outing to Seven (there was talk that it was the last one, although this was drunken talk), a poker night with people I've never played with before and a format I have next to no experience of live, the wackiest japanese musical ever and more strangeness...
The poker on Thursday was particularly fun (no-limit tournament structure) had a few choice moments, not least of which was me going all in after the flop with my Q8 hitting Q88. We flip over the cards to find me a definite favourite - his pair of tens looking reasonable on their own, but decidely under-dogish against my house. Obviously he hit one of the two remaining tens on the river to rip me a new one - pushing me out in the process.
Silver-lining-wise I was told of a west country no-money poker tournament that plays in the Assembly Inn on tuesday nights. Sign up is at www.poker.co.uk/league and it is supposed to be pretty good. You play for points, but do well enough and you can move up to winning stuff. Good practice if nothing else. I've already signed up (free) and will try and check it out this week.
Visited my Nan (Isaac's great Nan) in hospital today. Not good. She's 91. Essentially too old to fix now as well. She loved seeing Isaac though, and perked up loads apparently.

Had the last few days off work in order to take up my unused holiday entitlement from the previous year. Future doesn't let you transmogrify unused days into cash, but at the editor's discretion they can be used in January. As we came back to a particularly nasty deadline (and I picked up a horrible virus thing from my editor), I thought I'd grab some time off. It's been chill, but I haven't got as much done around the house as I wanted. Even so, did manage to push my online poker bank roll up a bit - finally at $100 (not bad from a $20 start). Also built a Shuttle PC, but it sounded like the space shuttle launching, so dismantled it again after installing Windows MCE and realising it was just too loud. In the meantime I'll keep using a laptop for the job (the battery on said laptop is knackered, but it works fine next to the tv).
New year's resolutions: many and varied, including the usual eat less, stop smoking (I officially never did smoke - although taking fag breaks at work could indicate otherwise), exercise more, etc... The only one that I haven't failed on already is a weird one: I want to take a photograph every day. Bit weird I know, but it's basically to get me a)out and about a bit more and b)make me use my expensive camera. It's been fun so far, although the quality of some of the shots hasn't been great - the weather hasn't helped, and I'm loathe to carry my tripod round with me.
Oh, and managed to catch the new Battlestar Galactica on sunday (Series 2, Episode 11). Blinding. Watching the whole series again on Sky One, it just rocks. |

I don’t think Darwin would approve, but sleeping through three fire alarms in a posh London hotel certainly has its benefits – an extra hours uninterrupted sleep if nothing else. Unsurprisingly excessive consumption of alcohol was involved mere hours before the Metropole didn’t burn down, although the general malaise felt this morning did leave me wishing that I had been shuffled off this mortal in my sleep. The reasons for this particular episode of Booziacs (alcohol abuse)? The PC Plus re-invented party. Much merriment, a falling out between ad teams, dodgy dancing and very pretty young ladies being cornered by drunken computer types and you have a top night all round really. Now, where did I leave my brain? |

Didn't realise it at the time, but I seem to be drinking a lot more wine lately. Maybe it's the sudden winter chill? Maybe it's buying a box of wine and ploughing through it in four days? I ran out of whiskey last week, otherwise I'd have drank some of that this week too. Off to Barcelona on Monday, back Thursday. Imagine I will get fairly plastered at some point.

Haven't had a drink since monday night (when admittedly I did get fairly steamed). Am planning on making it a week of abstinence. This will probably be the longest I've gone without a tipple in roughly a year. Not smoking either. Someone suggested that I tried continuing for a month... it's not going to happen obviously. At least not the drinking, the smoking is another thing though, we'll see how that goes (I fear once I start on the source again, the temptation to fill a lung with nasty smoke may be too much).
Should make for a relatively low unit count this week at least... |

My mobile's alarm dragged me into groggy consciousness at 7:30 this morning. Woke up at Ian's flat after a cracking stag day/night. I was supposed to be staying at Danny G's, but he wasn't interested in going back and smoking, which is why I woke up in the wrong flat. All my stuff (including the keys to the car) were still at Danny G's though, so I had to go and wake him up. The rush? Get home in time for Wend to drop Isaac off. I made it back here (having stirred Danny G from his sleep) by 8:30, Wend didn't turn up until 9:30, I was trying to get to sleep on the sofa when she did.
Now home, but still feel pissed. Isaac is having a chilled day. Watched Monster's Inc (again), tried watching the ashes, but Isaac doesn't like cricket apparently. Need to shop, but just know I'm going to buy random shite...
Top night last night - remember telling some girls that they were too beautiful to go to Cadillacs. Genius. Oh and being outrageous towards the waitress in the green park brassiere.
Isaac is making monster hands at me. And then apologising when I look scared. Wonderful.
And no, absolutely no idea how much I drank last night. It was a lot. I drank a lot last week to be honest - Lorna's, Poker, Lou, Stag night... |

I'm trying to cut down on the amount of booze I'm drinking, although obviously not abstaining ;) Keeping track of what I'm drinking seems like a reasonable idea, but the problem with this is typified by last night. Industry jolly, jet lagged, so drinking to stay awake - was well on the way in the main event hall thanks to a couple of glasses of red wine. Then went on to a martini bar, where I drank something randomly green - I asked for something unusual... I got it. Don't know what was in it, so no idea on the units. It was about this time that I lost track of what I drank. I vaguely remember ordering two long island ice teas (which were bastard strong), playing poker, drinking beer and talking to an hilariously scary yank who wanted to shoot Al Gore. It was the kind of night when you wake up in the morning amazed that you are in bed, you've managed to bring everything back with you, and you've not vomited in the closet. Top. But no idea how much I drank.
On a separate note, some people did express an interest in me buying some stuff while I was out here (PSP stuff specfiically). Who wants what? |

Well, as already reported, I managed a great start to the week on the alc. front with a whopping 17.5 units, thankfully things have calmed down since then:
Monday = 4x 1/2 pt Leffe + 5x double vodka and cokes = 17.5 units
Tuesday = 2 pints Kingfisher (4.8%) + 1 Whiskey = 6.5 units
Wednesday = 1 pint Boddingtons = 2 units
Thursday = 2 pints Budvar + 1 pint Otter (4.5%) = 8 units
Friday = 1/2 bottle of 12% wine = 4.5 units
Saturday = The rest of that bottle + 3/4 bottle 13% wine = 12 units
Sunday = Come on, it's a day of rest = 0 units
Grand Total = 50.5
Erm... jesus christ that seems a lot. Hmm... Next week I'm in SF. Weaker beer is good, but it's going to be free to a degree, so I need to be careful. |

Following the crowd, here's the drink consumption so far for this week (and yes I know it's Monday, but I'm never drinking again - honest):

5x double vodka and coke = 10 units
Oh, and apart from costing me quite a few beer coupons, this little lot also resulted in me being completely shitfaced, as anyone who was at Seven last night will testify to. Top laugh though ;) |
